Wood: Hazael & Myrtle

I married Hazael Wood from Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island, Ontario, who farmed in the Willmar district. We moved onto Dad's old farm homestead, which had been vacated by Will Sinclair who had farmed there for several years.

In November 1919 our daughter Fern was born and in October 1921 our son Glenn was born. Both attended Yankee School where I had gone to school briefly in the winter months, when Sinclair School was closed. We lived on Dad's farm until we sold out in 1929, the beginning of " The Great Depression". We moved to Sault St. Marie, Ontario where Hazael obtained work with his brother in the Shell Oil business. Fern and Glenn went through the school system here; Glenn went to university in 1941 in Montreal. After graduation he worked in Y.M.C.A. and then high school, later becoming principal. The last ten years before his retirement in June 1981, he was principal of two schools. He married Wendy Cleugh of Montreal in 1954. They have three sons- Scott, Dean and Kent. Scott and Dean are graduates of the University of New Brunswick at Fredricton with teacher's certificates, B. ED. Kent finished his high school in June 1981.

Fern was a draughts man for Dominion Bridge Co., in the Soo, then transferred to Toronto in 1941, and later to head office in Montreal. She married Harold S. Irwin, an engineer with that company, in September 1951. They live in Toronto where Fern is prominent in sports, especially curling and golf. They have no family.

Hazael, my husband, died July 1973 and I am still living in my own home. I retired in 1975 from twenty-nine years in a store and eight years as a cashier at the ferry between Sault St. Marie, Michigan and Soo, Ontario.

A Tribute to the Late Mrs. Myrtle V. Wood

Myrtle V. (nee Littlejohn) Wood of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario passed away Feb. 11, 1984 very suddenly and unexpectedly while spending a short time with her daughter and son-in-law Fern and Harold Irwin , who were vacationing at the time at Panama City Beach, Florida.

Mrs Wood was born May 3, 1897 at Glasston, N. Dakota coming with her parents and sister Fledda to Saskatchewan (then known as N.W.T.) in 1904. They moved to their farm 2 miles west of Arcola in 1906. From here she received her education at Clare and Arcola schools and normal school in Regina. She then taught at Yankee School, Browning.

She later married Hazael Wood and they resided for several years at Browning, where their daughter Fern, and son Glenn were born and attended school.

The family moved to Sault Ste. Marie in 1930 and resided there since then. Mrs. Wood became an accomplished singer and vocalist and was well known in that city and community. She was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church for 50 years and until the time of her passing.

She was associated for many years with The Sault Ste. Marie Ladies Coral Society, and the Gordon Christie Singers and had sung over the C.B.C. Church of the Air. She was partially instrumental in the beginning of the Music Festival in that city and district.

During the war years she was a tireless worker contributor to the Y.W.C.A. and Red Cross war efforts. She also worked for several years as cashier at the Ferry Dock and later the Friedman Department Store.

Funeral services were held in Westminster Presbyterian Church on February 17th at 1:00 p.m. with the choir in attendance. During the singing of the hymn, Abide With Me, the choir proceeded the casket down the aisle, with six of the male choir members acting as pallbearers. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Refreshments were served by the Choir and Ladies of the Church in the church hall following the service.

The very large number of friends and acquaintances in attendance and who paid tribute to her memory in words, flowers and memorial contributions attested to the high esteem in which she was held in the community.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Fern Irwin of Toronto; son Glenn of Montreal; son-in-law Harold Irwin; daughter-in-law Wendy Wood; grandsons, Scott Wood, Moncton, N.B.; Dean Wood Calgary; Kent Wood, Montreal. Dear sister, Mrs. Thomas McIlrath (Ruth) Burnaby, B.C. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Hazael Wood, and sister Fledda Marsh.

The following poem was composed by a cousin and sent in sympathy to the immediate family. They feel it says so well what so many have conveyed in the past sad weeks.

In Memory Of Myrtle Littlejohn Wood

A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is still.
God in His Wisdom thought it best
To call her home to Eternal Rest.

Because she was so dear to us,
Her memory will live on,
Just as the fragrance of a flower,
Lingers when it is gone.

The love and beauty that were hers alone,
In thoughts are with us still
For in our hearts we loved her
And we always will.
