Sinclair: William & Emma
I was born in Manitoba, on a farm near Hart and Inglow. My parents moved to Saskatchewan in 1930 to a farm near Browning.
I went to a school in Browning called Yankee school. In those days my little brother and I had to walk or drive ourselves to school. We really thought nothing of it even if we did get caught in some bad dust storms or blizzards. A few times I froze my legs and my face, but thought nothing of it. Sometimes we caught a ride with the neighbors or my dad would come for us.
I met William Sinclair who was born in 1904 on a farm his dad homesteaded. We were married in Stoughton, Saskatchewan, and then rented a farm southwest of Stoughton, called the Wilson farm.
In the spring of 1934 the grasshoppers were very bad. They cleaned out the crops around the farm; even the leaves on the trees were gone. We were forced to move to my parents' farm in Browning. I stayed at home and my husband went to Nipawin to work for the summer months. We stayed the winter at Browning.
In March, 1935 we went to Manitoba and worked for farmers. The wages were very low then, as low as five and ten dollars a month in the winter. Summer months we did a little better, twenty-five dollars and up. We worked very hard but enjoyed it all
In 1947 we moved back to Saskatchewan. We wanted a home of our own very much, and farms in Manitoba were priced so high there wasn't much chance of us buying there. Bill's dad helped us locate a farm two miles south of Browning. It was the Andrew Fornwald farm. Although I didn't like the buildings, they were heaven to us, after not having a home of our own for so long.
We lived on the farm until 1966, when we bought a house , sold our farm and moved to Lampman. Bill worked for Nat Davidson a few years and I worked at the Lampman Hospital as both a spare and full-time cook and helper until May 1, 1981. Bill also worked for Clayton and Melvin Grimes until his retirement. We like our home in Lampman and also our neighbors and hope to live and enjoy a few more years here.
